Improved productivity of naturalized spring Chinook salmon following reintroduction from a hatchery stock in Lookingglass Creek, Oregon

Supplementation of depressed salmonid populations with hatchery production has been questioned due to domestication effects, which may reduce reproductive fitness. However, for extirpated populations, reintroduction typically requires use stocks. We evaluated this strategy by monitoring the naturalization spring Chinook salmon reintroduced Lookingglass Creek, OR (Grande Ronde Basin), from a captive brood, stock. compared success (RS) naturally spawning natural-origin relative (NOR) hatchery-origin (HOR) adults across 9 brood years. Individual RS (the number progeny produced) was estimated pedigree reconstruction analyses, and then analyzed generalized linear models estimate effect parental origin, while controlling potentially confounding covariates. When evaluating juvenile progeny, NOR spawners were more likely be reproductively successful, when produced on average than successful HOR counterparts. found similar advantage adult although origin not as important among spawners. Results suggest fish stock possess adaptive capacity positively contribute natural productivity recovery goals.
